About product

Armory 1:48 B-24 Liberator and PB4Y Privateer wheels, type b tread pattern (FS)

This item is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory wheel set in 1:48 scale from the Armory company. It replaces the wheels supplied in the kit of the B-24 Liberator bomber and of its naval patrol relative, the PB4Y Privateer. The name gives main wheels with the type b (FS) tread pattern, two nose wheel variants, a 3D-printed mudguard and photo-etched hubcaps.

How they differ from the wheels in the box

A printed resin part captures the tread pattern and the lettering on the sidewall of the tire far more crisply than injection-molded plastic, and the lightening holes stay legible on the rim. What is crucial, though, is the weighted tire effect: the wheel is printed with a flattened bottom, so the finished model rests on the ground with a flat contact patch instead of a thin line. The photo-etched hubcaps then cover the parting seam that a plastic wheel practically always gives away.

The real subject

The B-24 Liberator was a four-engine heavy bomber with nose landing gear; the PB4Y Privateer grew out of it as a naval patrol machine. Tires for both types were supplied by several makers and the individual tread patterns differed from each other, so choosing the right type is a recognition detail of a particular machine. Armory therefore offers the patterns as separate sets and marks them with a letter and an abbreviation.

Building and painting tips

Wash the parts in warm soapy water: any uncured resin residue would keep the paint off. Cut the print supports off with a saw or a knife and level the area with a file and abrasive paper. Sand wet or with a respirator, as resin dust should not be inhaled. Only cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) makes the joint hold; cement for plastic does not work here. Apply a primer before painting, otherwise the shade will not hold on smooth resin. When gluing the wheel, make sure the flattened area points straight down.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the B-24 Liberator or the Privateer in 1:48
  • Modelers who want the model to stand on loaded tires
  • Those building from a particular photograph who care about the type of tread pattern
  • Modelers with experience of resin and cyanoacrylate glue

The set is an accessory, not a kit of the aircraft. It is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a separate wheel set in resin that you swap for the plastic wheels from the kit in 1:48 scale during the build.

It imitates the deformation of the rubber under the weight of the aircraft. The finished model then does not stand on round discs and the landing gear looks loaded.

Wash the parts in warm soapy water, cut off the print supports, level the mating surface and glue with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer before painting.

In the tread pattern of the tire. The manufacturer releases the individual patterns separately and marks them in the name with a letter and an abbreviation.
