Pre-colored steel photo-etched seat belts for the crew of the B-25J bomber with the glazed nose, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The North American B-25J was the most numerous version of the twin-engine Mitchell and existed in two very different forms. The one with the glazed nose kept the bombardier's station and was used for classic bombing from medium altitude, while the so-called strafer had a nose full of machine guns. The glazed variant therefore has more seats with harnesses in the cockpit, and those are exactly what can easily be brought to life on a model.
The belts are etched from thin steel sheet and came from the factory already painted. Steel is more malleable than brass and holds the bend you give it, so the strap follows the seat pan faithfully or drapes over the edge of the shell. Buckles and adjusting hardware are part of the etch and only need folding along the scored lines.
The procedure is simple. Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp knife on a hard surface, level the edges with a file and degrease them with alcohol before gluing. Shape them with smooth-jawed tweezers. They will hold on super glue or on a drop of two-part epoxy, which gives you time to position them.
The most convincing strap is the one that is not taut. Let it drape over the side of the shell and ripple slightly, as if someone had thrown it aside when leaving the aircraft. Tie the ends under the buckle so that the back with its different shade stays visible; that detail does a great deal in a model cockpit.
