An injection-molded plastic model of the floatplane version of the American cabin biplane Beechcraft SD17S Staggerwing in 1:48 scale from Roden. Unlike the land versions, this machine stands on a pair of floats. The model offers an engraved surface with imitation fabric covering, a detailed cockpit and cabin, a multi-part radial engine, new parts for the float undercarriage, clear parts and a rigging diagram.
The SD17S was the floatplane version of the Staggerwing, built on a pair of floats that allowed it to take off from and land on lakes, reservoirs and rivers. With the coming of the Second World War these machines were used for patrol and liaison duties, among other places in lake districts and in Alaska, where stretches of water took the place of airfields. They were powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior radial engine, and the floats came with auxiliary beaching wheels for handling on the shore.
Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic and reinforce the thin struts and float braces with cyanoacrylate. Set the interplane struts symmetrically (mind the reversed stagger) as well as the float struts, and rig the model according to the diagram. Set the bottoms of the floats apart according to the finish you choose; paint the cabin and the engine before you close them up.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
