The oldest production version of the letter E was armed with four machine guns, two above the engine and two in the wing. It was in this form that the last examples reached the German contingent fighting in Spain at the close of the Spanish Civil War. The experience from there was fundamental for the whole type: it confirmed that speed and rate of climb matter more than agility in a turn, and it gave rise to the pair and the four as the basic combat formation, which was later adopted by air services worldwide.
In September 1939 this version formed a significant part of the fighter force committed over Poland. It turned out, however, that machine gun fire was not enough against all-metal targets, and production quickly switched to variants with cannons. A number of examples still flying went through conversion in the workshops, so relatively few machines in the original form survived, and a modeler who reaches for this version is building the rarer rather than the typical form of the machine.
An angular canopy with many straight frames is a rewarding shape to mask, but for that very reason every inaccuracy on it hits the eye at once. The die-cut parts deal with the small side windows too, and the inner part of the set makes sure the frames are not seen as clear plastic from the cockpit.
