About product

Why weapons were added under the Gustav's wings

The Bf 109G-14 came about in the summer of 1944 as an attempt to bring one settled standard into production out of the dozens of partial modifications which until then had differed from piece to piece. The basic armament consisted of an MG 151/20 cannon firing through the axis of the engine and a pair of MG 131 machine guns on the upper side of the cowling. Against four-engine bombers that was too little, however, and so gondolas with another pair of cannons were mounted under the wings. The firepower rose, but so did the drag and the weight away from the axis of the machine: an aircraft armed like that lost its agility and got into serious trouble against escort fighters.

The package follows that basic, lighter configuration. The metal part brings two turned machine gun muzzles for above the engine plus a Pitot tube. The films cover the cockpit glazing outside and inside, another sheet of masks serves for the national insignia, and a decal sheet is enclosed as well, so part of the marking can be handled the classic way and part by spraying.

A combination of the two is practical: large crosses and numerals look better sprayed, whereas fine technical lettering transfers more comfortably by decal.

One more note on the metal parts. On this type the machine gun muzzles above the cowling are visible from close up and in line with the view, so the difference between an open tube and a blind plastic stub catches the eye sooner than any other detail of the front end. The Pitot tube is moreover the first thing to break off during ordinary handling of a finished model, and a metal replacement removes that weakness for good.

Everything is measured to the Hasegawa kit in 1:48 scale, which has to be obtained separately.

FAQ

Yes, unlike most similar sets a decal sheet is part of the delivery alongside the masks.

The pair of machine guns mounted above the engine; neither the cannon in the axis nor any underwing gondolas are included.

A clean and degreased surface free of fingerprints is enough so that the film adheres over its whole area.

For the Hasegawa kit in 1:48 scale, to whose shapes the cut-outs are measured.
