About product

Instrument panel for the Canberra PR Mk.9 in 1:48 scale from CMK

This item is not a model of an aircraft, but a resin interior accessory. It replaces the instrument panel of an injection-molded kit of the reconnaissance Canberra in 1:48 scale with a casting that has the instruments, bezels and controls rendered in relief. The solution suits modelers who want to raise the cockpit quickly and do not want to bend photo-etched parts.

The real subject

The English Electric Canberra was a British twin-engine jet bomber designed shortly after the Second World War. The PR Mk.9 version was a specialized reconnaissance conversion with a markedly enlarged wing area and more powerful engines, which allowed it to work at great altitudes. A characteristic feature was the offset pilot's station with a sliding fighter-type canopy and the separate station of the navigator in the nose, which was entered through a hinged nose. Machines of this version remained in British service for an exceptionally long time and were among the last Canberras operated at all.

Usage and painting tips

First wash the casting with lukewarm soapy water and let it dry. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the back side so that the panel sits in the right position in the fuselage, ideally after a dry fit before the halves of the fuselage are glued together. Spray the base in dark gray or black according to the base you use for British cockpits of the era, and then draw the instruments out with a dry brush in a lighter shade. Once dry, the dials can be brought out with a drop of clear gloss varnish, which imitates glass. We recommend reckoning with the fact that the cockpit will be visible only with the canopy open.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British postwar jet aircraft in 1:48
  • modelers who want a detailed cockpit without working with photo-etched parts
  • those interested in a build with the cockpit canopy open
  • modelers who dare to paint small detail

This is an accessory for modelers, not a standalone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It follows from the name that it is an instrument panel. What exactly the package contains is stated on the packaging.

Whether a decal sheet is included is stated on the packaging. The instruments are rendered in relief in the casting, so they can be painted in and drawn out with a dry brush.

Best of all before the halves of the fuselage are glued together. A resin panel tends to be thicker than the plastic original and sometimes the seat for it has to be adjusted.
