A detailing accessory from the Polish maker MASTER, which specializes in turned brass parts for plastic modeling: barrels, probes and pitot tubes. The set contains a turned brass pitot tube for models of the carrier-based F-8E/J Crusader fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft kit: it is a replacement part that you glue into your own model.
A pitot tube is an airspeed sensor, a thin tube pushed out into undisturbed airflow, which derives the speed of the aircraft from the pressure of the oncoming air. On a model it is one of the most exposed and most fragile details. The plastic version from the mold is necessarily too thick, tends to be warped and risks breaking off with every sanding, masking or lifting out of the box. Turned brass solves the problem by its very nature: the part is as thin as the real tube was, perfectly straight and mechanically tough. It will not bend under your fingers and in a finished display case it does not look like a plastic spike but like a piece of metal, because that is what it is.
The Vought F-8 Crusader was an American carrier-based fighter, famous for one very unusual solution: it had a variable-incidence wing. On takeoff and landing on a carrier the whole wing center section lifted relative to the fuselage to a greater angle of attack, so that the wing got the lift it needed while the fuselage, and with it the pilot's view and the nose gear, stayed at a tolerable angle. The F-8E and F-8J versions were among the most widely used and highest-performing variants of the type.
