GPI-72 is a kit of a Soviet screw-propelled off-road vehicle for travel through snow, mud and water, in 1:43 scale from the maker AVD Models.

The kit captures the GPI-72, a Soviet special driven not by wheels or tracks but by two giant rotating augers. It is they that move it where ordinary vehicles bog down - in deep snow, in churned-up tundra and on water. 1:43 is the classic car scale, so the model will add a genuinely unusual shape to a cabinet of collector cars.
The idea of screw propulsion was revived in the 1960s by designers at the Gorky Polytechnic Institute, who worked steadily on machines for the Arctic and for roadless country. After the first experimental vehicles came the GPI-72 type, which built on the running units of the GAZ-66 truck. The two hollow augers beneath the hull do two jobs at once: they carry the vehicle like floats and at the same time screw it forward with their thread. On a swamp the machine could travel at around twenty-five kilometers per hour, and on water at around ten. The drawback is that a screw-propelled vehicle cannot run on a made-up road, so it was carried to the place where it was needed. Even so it remains one of the most interesting solutions that Soviet engineering produced for roadless country.
Put the parts together dry first and check that the two augers are in line, because setting them unevenly shows at first glance on a finished model. Glue with an adhesive suitable for the material the parts are made of. A primer will help even the surface up. A metallic cast on the edges of the thread suits the augers, because they are polished by abrasion, and so do traces of mud and wet snow in the recesses. The hull will take restrained weathering and a bright warning color of the kind typical of polar and survey vehicles.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
