About product

Cromwell 1:48 - photo-etched cooling grilles (Hauler)

This is not a kit of the tank but an accessory set made of photo-etched brass sheet. It is cut for a specific Tamiya kit and solves one of the most conspicuous places on the model - the grilles over the engine compartment. Even with a good mold the plastic part is always several times thicker than the scale calls for, and the openings in it tend to be blind. Photo-etched sheet has a real thickness in tenths of a millimeter, so the mesh is see-through and from above you can look past it into the hull.

The real subject

The Cromwell was a British cruiser tank of the second half of the war, powered by a Rolls-Royce Meteor engine derived from the aero Merlin. It was the powerful engine that called for extensive cooling grilles at the rear and along the sides of the engine compartment. Cromwells fought from the Normandy landings in 1944 in British armored units and served with the Czechoslovak Independent Armoured Brigade as well.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with nippers - otherwise the sheet ripples. Level the remains of the tabs with a fine-toothed file. Degrease the brass with alcohol or acetone before gluing and apply a primer meant for metal, or the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. It is bonded with super glue applied with a pin in negligible drops; a thicker gel version gives you more time to settle the part. It works well to paint the space under the grille matte black or dark brown first - you can see through the mesh and light plastic would show through.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to move an otherwise good kit a level higher
  • Builders of British armor in 1:48 scale
  • Those who already have experience of photo-etch and super glue
  • A build for a display case or a diorama, where the top of the hull is clearly visible

This is an accessory for building a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory set of photo-etched parts that you add to a plastic Cromwell kit in 1:48 scale. The kit itself is not included in the package.

Cyanoacrylate super glue, applied in very small drops. Classic cement for plastic has no effect on brass.

Yes. Degrease the parts with alcohol or acetone and apply a thin coat of primer meant for metal. Without it the paint holds poorly on smooth brass.

Grilles are among the simpler photo-etched sets, because they are mostly just glued onto a surface. Even so it helps to have tried working with photo-etch on a less visible part.
