AIMS 1:48 de Havilland Vampire F.3 / FB.5 and FB.9 Collection is a sheet of waterslide decals with eleven sets of markings for British jet fighters from 1948 to 1954.
Responsibility details are not available.
The AIMS brand builds its output on markings that are usually missing from the boxes of kits. This sheet covers the F.3 fighter version as well as the FB.5 and FB.9 fighter-bombers, altogether eleven particular machines of the Royal Air Force and of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. Among them you will find VF327 of No. 601 Squadron from 1952, VT809 of No. 73 Squadron, WA331 of No. 112 Squadron and WR252 of No. 8 Squadron from 1954. The package holds decal sheets only.
The Vampire was the second jet type in Royal Air Force service and the first to fly across the Atlantic. Its twin-boom layout with a short jet pipe came about because of the centrifugal-flow Goblin engine, whose thrust would have been lost in a long duct. The F.3 version was given a greater fuel capacity and modified tail surfaces, the FB.5 clipped wings, strengthened landing gear and pylons for bombs and rockets, and the FB.9 cockpit cooling for service in the tropics. That is precisely why the machines on one sheet differ in the shape of their wingtips and in their equipment.
Level the surface under the markings with a gloss varnish, cut the individual elements off close to the print and transfer them with lukewarm water. On large national insignia crossing rivets and transitions, a softener will help. Once dry comes a covering varnish in the degree of gloss the machine is to have.
