The real subject

The EA-6B Prowler is a carrier electronic warfare aircraft of the US Navy. It is based on the A-6 Intruder carrier attack aircraft, but it has a lengthened fuselage for a larger crew and at the top of the vertical tail it carries a pod with equipment. Its task was not to bomb but to jam enemy radars and communications and so to cover the other aircraft of a formation. The gray finishes of naval machines are restrained, and the national insignia and lettering stand out on them all the more.

What the set is for

The set contains masks for spraying the national insignia and markings. The insignia are therefore not applied as decals but sprayed directly in paint. The carrier film falls away and with it the risk of a glossy edge around an insignia, and the markings follow the surface of the model including the engraving. The masks are pre-cut and intended for EA-6B models in 1:48 scale from the Kinetic and Revell companies, so nothing has to be measured out or cut. Sprayed markings also take later weathering just like the finish around them and there is no risk of the edge of a decal lifting as it ages.

Building and painting tips

• Fit the mask only onto a dry base coat.
• Wash and degrease the surface beforehand, otherwise the mask will not hold all round.
• Press the edges down and spray the paint in thin coats.
• Multicolored insignia are sprayed coat by coat, in the order given in the manufacturer's instructions.
• Lift the mask off soon after the paint has dried, at a slant to the surface.
