1:48 Early Strafers The Grim Reapers 1942-43 is a decal sheet from DK Decals devoted to the early attack machines of the American 3rd Bomb Group over New Guinea.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a decal sheet, not a kit. The subject is the early so-called strafers, that is the attack machines of the 3rd Bomb Group with the nickname The Grim Reapers, as they looked in the period 1942 to 1943. The markings are worked up for models in 1:48 scale.
In the US Army Air Forces in the Pacific a strafer was the term for a twin-engined machine adapted to attack at very low altitude. The bombsight and the glazing in the nose disappeared and were replaced by a battery of machine guns firing forward, to which further weapons in side pods were often added. The conversion arose directly in the field workshops of the Fifth Air Force, because conventional bombing from altitude against Japanese convoys and dispersed airfields on New Guinea was failing. Attacking from a few tens of meters with delay-fuzed bombs, by contrast, proved exceptionally effective. It was out of these conversions that the later production forms of the attack versions grew. The machines of the 3rd Bomb Group also carried striking personal artwork and lettering, which makes them a rewarding modeling subject.
For modelers interested in the US Army Air Forces in the southwest Pacific and in field-modified machines that differed markedly from the factory form.
