A Big Ed bundle from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the Lockheed F-104A in 1:48 scale. In it the manufacturer brings several separately sold accessory sets for one model together in a single package. The F-104A was the first production version of the slender supersonic fighter with short straight wings and a T-tail. It is not a kit; the bundle completes a base kit, which is bought separately. Eduard also offers photo-etched sets, masks and decals for the same type under very similar names; the individual sets are told apart by the exact designation of the series.
Putting accessories for one model together one at a time means watching that they do not overlap and that they follow one another in the right order. The bundle solves that by arriving all together. The exact list of contents differs from bundle to bundle according to what the manufacturer has issued for the kit in question, and it is given on the packaging. Do lay the contents out before building and plan what goes into the model first; with the cockpit and the landing gear bays, once the fuselage is closed it is too late.
The crucial decision is the order of spraying. If masks are part of the bundle, they go on the model only once the base color has dried and are pulled off while the paint is fresh; on a fully cured finish they can tear the edge of the paint away. Pre-painted photo-etched parts, by contrast, are not masked at all: nothing is ever sprayed over them, and they are fitted only once the surroundings are finished and varnished. Bare photo-etch calls for the opposite procedure from pre-painted: degrease, a thin primer for metal, then the paint. At the end everything is unified with one coat of matte varnish, so that the pre-painted parts do not shine with a different sheen from the finish around them.
This is a bundle of accessories, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
