Big Ed is a pack of accessory sets, not an aircraft kit. The Big Ed range from the Czech maker Eduard brings several separately sold photo-etched sets and a masking set for the same model together into one box. The modeler thus gets interior detail, exterior detail and masks in a single purchase and does not have to put the combination together alone. Watch out for the right choice of version: this item is cut for the ASA version, not for the base F-104S nor for the later ASA-M standard, which are separate packs of the same range. The particular make-up of the pack and the number of parts are stated on the box.
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine supersonic aircraft with a very small trapezoidal wing with a sharp leading edge and with the horizontal tail surface set high on the fin. The F-104S version was the license-built Italian variant reworked to carry medium-range guided missiles and fitted with a matching radar. The ASA designation refers to a later Italian upgrade program aimed at updating the radar and the weapon systems; outwardly it differs from the base version only in details, which makes it all the more important to reach for the set for the right standard when building.
Cut the photo-etched parts off on a hard surface, make the bends over an edge or in a bending tool and anneal larger areas briefly before forming. Degrease the metal and spray it with a primer suited to metal, otherwise the paint will flake off in time. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue in small drops. Finish the interior and the instrument panel before you close the fuselage up. Stick the masks on a clean and degreased canopy, spray the paint in thin coats and pull the mask off shortly after it has dried. On a Starfighter it also pays to give attention to the leading edges of the wing, which are very thin in 1:48 scale and easily damaged in handling.
