Pre-cut masks in kabuki paper for a model of the carrier-borne F-14A fighter in 1:48 scale, specifically for its late production form. Why the canopy is masked on the Tomcat

The F-14 has a large teardrop canopy with a minimum of framing, which hinges upward. That is exactly why it is so conspicuous on a finished model: a single unsharp paint edge along the curve of the frame is visible from right across a display case. Tape cut by hand breaks on a curved surface and forms creases, so even an experienced modeler has to cut it in short sections. A pre-cut mask follows the curve in one piece.

Usage tips

Apply the pressure along the curve from the center toward the edges, not from the edge — otherwise the paper will ripple on the curvature. Once the masks are on, it is a good idea to spray a thin coat of the glazing color or of the base color as a sealing layer; any seepage is then hidden under the final shade. For low-contrast gray camouflage the rule is that the boundaries between shades are sprayed softly, but the glazing frames, by contrast, need a crisp edge — which is why the canopy is masked with pre-cut paper and not merely covered loosely.
