Stencils for the framing of the cockpit and, in addition, for the landing gear wheels of the early Phantoms of the US Air Force, 1:48 scale.
The C version came out of the naval carrier Phantom and did not hide it: a robust landing gear with wide tires called for bulged fairings in the upper surface of the wing, where the wheel retracts. The rear cockpit had full controls. The D version received new avionics for more accurate bomb release and was among the first carriers of guided munitions in larger numbers. Neither of them had a built-in cannon, so for the fight for air superiority a gun pod was carried under the fuselage. The difference between the two versions is one for a specialist: mainly the equipment of the nose and the instruments in the cockpits change, while the external outline of the airframe stayed practically unaltered.
The tire and the hub differ in shade and in sheen and their boundary is among the first things you notice on a finished model. First spray the whole wheel in the dark tone of the rubber, then lay the stencil on and only then go over with the lighter hub. Do the canopy frames and the landing gear doors in the same stage of the build, so that they keep a comparable degree of sheen. Apply the paint in light coats and lift the stencil off before the finish has fully cured.
