A set for painting the landing gear bays of the Phantom II in the B, C, D, J, N and S versions. A single sheet thus covers the whole group of machines that come from a common basis with the so-called hard wing. The shapes of the masks follow the bays of the Hasegawa kit.
The first Phantoms were built as carrier aircraft for the defense of US Navy task forces, and their armament consisted solely of guided missiles. The B version became the main carrier fighter of the early 1960s, after which the US Air Force also took an interest in the type and adopted its own C and D forms. The naval line continued with the J version and its stronger radar equipment. Older examples then went through an extensive rebuild: the N grew out of the B and the S out of the J, the latter gaining leading-edge slats. It was exactly this ability to survive two or three upgrades that made the Phantom one of the longest-serving combat machines of its day.
Open up the bays and paint them before the fuselage shells are brought together. Apply the coat gradually and let it build up by repetition rather than by a lot of paint at once. Take the masks off calmly and preferably in good light, because small pieces are easily overlooked in a deep space.
