An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from Modelsvit. It covers the twin-fuselage F-82 Twin Mustang fighter in the F and G versions, that is in the radar-equipped guises. According to the name the set offers four camouflage schemes. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, on sprues, with instructions and a sheet of decals.
The F-82 Twin Mustang is one of the most striking aircraft of the postwar period: it came about by joining two fuselages derived from a single-engine fighter into one airframe with a common center section and a common horizontal tail. The design gave the machine a long range and room for a second crew member, which suited long-distance escort flights and night and all-weather patrol alike. The F and G versions were intended for work in the dark and carried a radar in a pod mounted under the center section. Power came from two liquid-cooled V12 engines with propellers that on some versions turned in opposite directions. The type belonged to the last generation of piston fighters before the arrival of jet propulsion.
A twin-fuselage structure makes demands on geometry — try the center section, both fuselages and the common tail surface dry and carry out the build on a flat surface, so that the model is not twisted. Finish the interiors of both cockpits before closing the fuselages. Fill the seams where the center section joins carefully and sand them down. With kits of this kind it pays to keep trying the parts as you go and to be patient about alignment. Fit the radar pod only after the lower surface has been painted. A dark night finish easily reads flat — lighten it by shading the centers of the panels gently and varnish with a gloss clear coat before the decals. At the end, unify the whole model with a matte varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
