A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the glazing of a model of the American Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale from Art Scale. It is neither a model nor decals but an aid to a build. Single-sided means that the masks cover the outer side of the clear parts, that is the side visible on a finished model. A modeler can mask the inner frames as well, or leave them unsprayed. The Wildcat has a heavily framed canopy with a great many narrow panes, so a pre-cut shape saves a really noticeable part of the work here. The masks are cut to the outline of the Eduard kit and they need not fit a kit from another manufacturer.
The Grumman F4F Wildcat was an American carrier fighter with the Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engine and a stocky fuselage into which the narrow-track landing gear was retracted by hand. The F4F-3 version was one of the early production machines and it had a fixed, non-folding wing, whereas later versions received a folding wing to save space on deck. The armament of the F4F-3 consisted of four machine guns in the wing. The Wildcat was the basic carrier fighter of the US Navy and the Marine Corps in the first period of the fighting in the Pacific, where it relied on the toughness of the airframe and good protection for the pilot.
Degrease the glazing and let it dry. Lift the parts off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers, seat them starting from one edge and push the air out. On the narrow panes of the framed canopy, check each part against the light to see whether it overlaps onto the frame. Press the edges down with a wooden toothpick. Apply the paint in thin coats; with a densely framed canopy it is better to spray several light coats than one heavy one. Remove the masks shortly after the paint is dry, pulling them back over themselves at a sharp angle, and wipe any adhesive residue off with lukewarm water.
This is an accessory set of masks, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
