About product

Fairey Flycatcher, early floatplane, 1:48 (Armory)

An unassembled and unpainted kit of a Fleet Air Arm biplane in floatplane form. The word Early in the name points to the early production shape of the machine, and the added word Wooden to the wooden construction that sets this variant apart from the later ones. It is a small but busy model with struts, bracing wires and floats, so it deserves a calm hand and a little experience. The contents of the package and the number of parts are not stated here.

The real subject

The Fairey Flycatcher was a British single-seat carrier fighter of the interwar period and one of the types that formed the backbone of Fleet Air Arm equipment in the 1920s. The biplane layout, the radial engine and the short stocky fuselage gave it an unmistakable look and at the same time very good takeoff and landing qualities, which counted for more than speed on the short decks of the ships of the day. Besides the wheeled variant the machine also flew on floats, which widened the ways it could be used away from aircraft carriers.

Building and painting tips

A biplane is built differently from single-wing models: try the whole assembly of wings and struts dry first and only then glue, and work in steps with a slow-setting joint so there is time to line everything up. Fit the floats just as carefully, because their geometry has to be symmetrical or the model will look crooked in the case. Run the bracing wires on only once the model is finished and painted, ideally from an elastic thread. An airbrush with primer handles the painting; keep the fabric-covered areas flat and hint gently at the ribs under the fabric. Paint the wooden parts by layering transparent tones one over another, as the wood grain only comes through from the base below.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of interwar British naval equipment.
  • More experienced builders of biplanes and floatplanes.
  • Collectors missing an older carrier machine in the case.
  • Those who want to take on bracing wires and work with wood tones.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They point to the early production shape of the machine in wooden construction. The exact extent of the difference against the later variant is not stated here.

Rather not. A biplane layout with struts and floats calls for careful alignment of the whole assembly.

Only on a finished and painted model, ideally from an elastic thread. Mark all the anchor points out beforehand.

By layering transparent tones one over another on a light base. The grain comes through from below, not from one opaque coat.
