Eduard 1:48 FM-2 Wildcat landing flaps is a photo-etched set of landing flaps for a model of the carrier fighter. It is a detail accessory, not a kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A photo-etched accessory from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale aimed at the landing flaps of an FM-2 Wildcat model. It is not an aircraft kit but a set with which an existing model is rebuilt. Its code range places it among the full photo-etched sets, not among the smaller pre-painted Zoom sets.
Why flaps are made from photo-etch
A flap is in reality a thin surface with internal ribbing. Injection-molded plastic, though, has to mold it at a thickness that is several times oversized in 1:48 scale, and it also tends to be molded retracted into the wing. A photo-etched replacement is as thin as real sheet metal and at the same time makes it possible to build the flaps in the extended position, which on an aircraft standing on deck is a perfectly ordinary state and gives a model a sense of movement.
The real subject
The FM-2 was a lightened version of the Wildcat carrier fighter built under license by General Motors. It can be told from the earlier versions among other things by its taller vertical tail surface. They were deployed mainly from smaller escort carriers.
Expect to have to cut the flap out of the plastic wing and level the surface. Make the cut with a thin file or a photo-etched saw, not with a scalpel, because plastic has a tendency to chip. Bend the ribbing on the photo-etch gradually and in a bender; the brass can be briefly annealed over a flame beforehand. Glue the assembly with cyanoacrylate and lay on a primer for metals before painting.
The set is an accessory for an aircraft model. The model itself, the glue and the paints are not included in the package.
