The GBU-31 JDAM is not a separately developed bomb but a bomb body fitted with a guidance kit. That consists of a tail section with movable control surfaces and of side strakes that stabilize the bomb in flight. It is guided by an inertial unit with satellite navigation input: after release the bomb heads for a previously entered point by itself and the aircraft does not have to keep tracking or illuminating it. The BLU-109 warhead is a penetrating body of the 2000 lb weight class with a thick-walled casing, meant first to pass through a hardened structure and only then to take effect inside.
Four pieces of this bomb in 1:48, in the version with thermal protection of the body. The set suits being hung under the wing or under the fuselage of a model, but it will also serve in a weapons-loading scene where the ordnance lies on a trolley beside the aircraft.
Cut excess material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder carefully, so that the cylindrical shape of the body is preserved. The parts are not made of polystyrene and ordinary plastic cement has no effect on them; use cyanoacrylate glue. Wash and degrease them before painting, otherwise the paint holds badly. When hanging them, watch that the axis of the bomb stays parallel with the axis of the aircraft and that all four pieces hang alike; a crooked store shows on a finished model more than anything else. The particular procedure for preparing the parts is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
For builders of modern combat aircraft who can use a more convincing store than the kit offers, and for those who build a scene with a ground crew. The model itself, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
