The kit captures the Grumman F-14 Tomcat carrier-borne fighter in the F-14B version, that is in the form with the new engines. The 1:48 scale is ideal for the Tomcat: the model comes out large, the variable-geometry wing shows well and there is room enough on it for detail. Great Wall Hobby is among the manufacturers who put their money on fine surface work.
The F-14 Tomcat was created as a carrier-borne interceptor for the US Navy, first flew in 1970 and stayed in service until 2006. Its identifying marks are its variable-geometry wing, its crew of two and its ability to carry long-range guided missiles. The F-14B version, originally designated F-14A Plus, came about by replacing the troublesome Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines with new General Electric F110-GE-400 turbofans. The new engines gave the aircraft substantially greater thrust and more reliable behavior at low speeds and removed part of the trouble the original powerplant brought during maneuvering. Besides the engines the version also received improved avionics, and in later years the Tomcat made its mark as a precision bombing platform as well.
Before gluing, decide whether you want the wing in the forward or in the swept position, because the shape of the fairings and covers depends on it too. The air ducts and the engine area deserve careful filling, as they are clearly visible on the Tomcat. The gray schemes of the US Navy come out best by progressively lightening the individual panels and lightly picking out the engraved lines; contrasting markings call for a gloss base under the decals. Keep the traces of service convincing, as carrier-borne machines tended to be worn above all around the exhausts and on the underside of the fuselage.
