A landing gear bay for the Grumman FM-2 Wildcat in 1:48 scale in 3D-printed resin. With this accessory Eduard fills the space that is visible from below on a model on a stand; it is not a kit of the aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Wildcat had landing gear that retracted into the fuselage, and the space around it is therefore surprisingly easy to see on a model. Injection-molded kits usually deal with that space with a smooth wall without structure. This Eduard set replaces it with a resin assembly made by 3D printing, which carries fine ribbing, piping and small riveting.
When it pays off
It tells most on models placed on a stand or in a position where the underside of the fuselage is on show, and on dioramas with the aircraft on a deck, where the viewer walks all around it.
The FM-2 was the last and the best performing variant of the Wildcat. It was built by Eastern Aircraft, a division of General Motors, and it differed from the older versions mainly in its single-row Wright Cyclone radial instead of the twin-row Twin Wasp, in a lightened structure and in a taller vertical tail, which balanced out the stronger torque. It was created for escort carriers with a short deck, where a quick takeoff and undemanding operation counted. It was in this form that the Wildcat served until the end of the war.
Wash the resin in lukewarm soapy water before painting. Cut the print supports off with a saw, level the area and try the bay dry before the fuselage is glued together, because once it is closed corrections are hard. Glue with super glue. Spray the inside in a light shade, let it dry and add a dark wash to draw the structure out. Add oil and scuff stains sparingly so that the detail is not lost.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a standalone model of the aircraft.
