A resin air brake set from Aires Hobby Models for a plastic kit of the Harrier in the GR.1, GR.3 and AV-8A versions in 1:48 scale. It replaces the brake flap part together with the space uncovered beneath it, so the model can be built with the brake extended. Injection-molded plastic tends to handle this place only as a flat part with no internal structure. The set is not a standalone model; it needs a base kit.
The air brake on the Harrier is placed on the underside of the rear fuselage and when the aircraft is standing on the ground it is usually extended. The GR.1 and GR.3 versions were British, while the AV-8A designation was carried by the variant delivered to the United States Marine Corps, deriving in design from the same first generation of the type with vertical and short takeoff. An extended brake is one of the details that give a finished model a lively look at first glance.
First wash the parts in warm water with detergent, so that release agent residue is removed. The original plastic part is usually cut out, so mark the place out beforehand and cut away step by step, finishing the edges by wet sanding. It is glued with cyanoacrylate. Paint and weather the inside of the brake well before you glue the flap in place for good, otherwise you will not get a brush in there. At the end a thin wash into the recesses and a light lift of the edges with a dry brush both help. Compare the angle of extension and any struts with photographs of the real machine, as they differ according to the state of the aircraft.
This is an accessory, not a kit of an aircraft. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Please make sure beforehand that the set matches the kit you want to build.
