About product

Hurricane Mk.I gun bays photo-etched set in 1:48 scale

This item is a photo-etched detail set from the manufacturer Eduard focused on the gun bays in the wing. An open panel above the armament is one of the most rewarding ways to give a model life: the viewer sees into the structure and the model stops looking like a closed shell. Injection-molded plastic usually handles this space only in simplified form, because the walls have to be thick for the mold. Photo-etched sheet is a fraction of a millimeter thin, so the ribs, stiffeners, bulkheads and brackets have realistic proportions.

The real subject

The Hawker Hurricane Mk I carried eight 7.7 mm machine guns in the wing, divided four to each side. The spaces for the guns and the ammunition feed were covered by removable panels, so that ground crew had quick access to them between flights. It is precisely the arrangement of this part of the wing that is most visible on a model with the panels open.

How the photo-etched parts are fitted

Working with this type of set is more demanding than with interior photo-etch, because the wing usually has to be cut into. The panels are cut out with a sharp knife or a scriber along the marked line, slowly and rather in several passes. Cut the photo-etched parts off the fret with a knife on a hard surface and make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool. They are bonded with super glue in a minimal amount, and on large areas with slower-setting epoxy. True the edges after cutting with a file and degrease the surfaces under the photo-etch. Give the metal a base coat before painting.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to build the model with the armament panels open
  • Experienced builders used to cutting into plastic parts
  • Those preparing a competition or display-case piece with a high level of detail
  • Builders bothered by the thickness of plastic walls in open spaces

The set is an add-on to a plastic kit. The model itself, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

In most cases yes. For the detail to be visible, the panels above the guns are cut out of the plastic wing. Allow for a sharp knife, a scriber and patience.

Rather not. The set assumes confidence in cutting into plastic and experience of fitting photo-etch. A smaller interior set suits a first encounter with photo-etch better.

No. It is an add-on to a plastic Hurricane kit in 1:48 scale, which you have to obtain separately.

Look for the number of parts on the box. The set concentrates on the armament bays in the wing and their structural features.
