Masking set for the two-seat Ilyushin Il-2M3 ground-attack aircraft in 1:48 scale. The films cover both glazed positions from the outside and the inside, and insignia masks and decals are enclosed. Cut for Tamiya plastic.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Ilyushin Il-2 carried its armored tub as a load-bearing part of the airframe, not as added protection. The two-seat M3 form got a gunner with a UBT machine gun behind the pilot and swept outer wing panels, which compensated for the shifted center of gravity. Protected from behind, the ground-attack aircraft stopped being easy prey and over the Eastern Front it became the most numerous combat aircraft of the war.
The peculiarity of this cockpit is that it forms two separate areas: the pilot's greenhouse with a thick transparent armored panel at the front and the more open space of the gunner at the rear. They do not sit on one another, each has a different curvature and a strip of skin lies between them. Masking both separately is therefore a necessity, not a choice, and this set is prepared for it from both sides.
The armored windscreen tends to be a thicker part on a model and the film on it has to sit exactly on the edge of the frame, otherwise a hint of paint will be noticeable on the glass after unmasking. It pays to keep the coats light and to run a wooden stick over the edge of the film once more before spraying. At the rear position do not forget the circular ring of the gun mount, around which the paint spreads easily. Anyone building the aircraft with the canopy slid back will appreciate that the reverse frames can be sprayed in the cockpit shade before being glued into the fuselage.
