This is a set of self-adhesive masks from Art Scale for a plastic model of the Japanese Mitsubishi J2M3 Raiden fighter in 1:48 scale. The masks are supplied pre-cut to shape, so laborious cutting from masking tape with a knife falls away, and they are stuck straight onto the clear part, that is the glazing of the model. This set is the single-sided form, the variant for masking from the outside; a double-sided set of the same type is sold separately. The masks are cut for the Hasegawa kit and may not fit a model from another maker.
The Mitsubishi J2M Raiden, given the Allied reporting name Jack, was a land-based fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Unlike carrier machines it was built not for range and agility but for speed and rate of climb, which is reflected in the rugged, bulged fuselage with its large engine. The J2M3 version is the best-known form of the type. From a modeling point of view the fairly small but heavily divided canopy, whose frames call out for a mask, is the interesting part.
Wash and degrease the glazing first, as fingerprints under a mask create blotches. Transfer the mask with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it down dry and press the edges with a toothpick. Spray in thin coats perpendicular to the surface; a heavy coat creates a step at the edge that shows once the mask is off. It pays to spray the frame shade first and the top color only afterwards, so that any bleed blends in. Take the mask off at an acute angle as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, not several days later.
This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. The model itself, paints and glue are not included.
