New Ware masks for the J35F/J Draken in 1:48 scale

This is an accessory, not a model of the aircraft. The set contains pre-cut masks that are stuck onto the canopy glazing and other areas that are to stay clean after spraying. The result is crisp, even canopy frames without laboriously cutting tape on the model itself and without paint creeping under. The word Basic places the set in the manufacturer's basic range; the exact contents of the package are given on the packaging.

Use

• Degrease the glazing carefully before masking and let it dry completely. On a greasy or dusty surface a mask will not hold and the paint will creep under.
• Lift the mask off the sheet with pointed tweezers or a toothpick, seat it along the frame and press it down with a wooden toothpick from the center toward the edges, especially around the perimeter.
• Cover the remaining areas of the glazing with tape or masking fluid. Cut masks usually cover only the frames, not the whole area of the canopy.
• Spray the frames first with the interior color of the cockpit and only then with the external finish. The transition then looks convincing from both sides.
• Spray the paint in thin coats. A heavy coat creates a ridge at the edge of the mask that is visible once it is removed.
• Remove the masks while the finish is only dry to the touch, not fully cured. Pull them back over themselves at a sharp angle, not straight upward.

The real subject

The Saab J35 Draken was a Swedish supersonic fighter with a characteristic double delta wing, which gave it good flying qualities over a wide range of speeds. The J35F version was armed with guided missiles and fitted with matching radar equipment, while the designation J35J was carried by machines that had been through a later upgrade which extended their service. The silhouette of the aircraft with its long fuselage and large canopy makes masking the glazing one of the key steps of the build.
