A masking set for the glazed nose of the Ju 88 A-4 bomber in 1:48. It handles the many-paned cockpit as well as the ventral gondola and contains two sheets for the crosses plus decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Junkers Ju 88 began as a fast bomber which was claimed to be beyond the reach of fighters, and ended as the machine with the widest range of tasks in the whole German inventory. Of all of it the A-4 form is the most widespread: a lengthened wing, Jumo 211J engines and a crew of four men sitting squeezed together in one shared space right in the nose. That very sitting together was meant to strengthen morale when the machine took a hit.
The glazing of this cockpit is a chapter of its own. It is not a convex teardrop but a polyhedron glued together from flat panes, each of which meets the next at a different angle; the nickname insect eye fits it more precisely than any technical description. At the front lies a flat panel for the bombardier, on top a bulge projects above the pilot's head and from below hangs a gun gondola with further small windows and with a rear firing position. A flat surface is easier to mask than a curve, except that there are so many panes and the edges converge at such irregular angles that hand-cut tape gets hopelessly lost in it.
On this type the crew space is glazed almost the whole way round, so it can be seen into from above, from the front and from below. The interior shade of the framing is therefore just as visible as the outer one and it is worth differentiating it.
