Photo-etched grilles for the KV-1 1:48 from the Czech maker Hauler replace the solid plastic cooling grilles on the engine deck of a model with genuinely see-through photo-etch.

An accessory set from the Czech maker Hauler aimed at the cooling grilles on the engine section of the Soviet KV-1 heavy tank. It is not a kit of the vehicle but thin brass parts with which you replace the plastic grilles on a model. The set is cut for the Tamiya kit.
The grille is the one detail where injection-molded plastic loses quite unambiguously. In reality it is a punched sheet with an empty space visible beneath it. A plastic part can only suggest the pattern by engraving into a solid surface, so even after perfect painting it comes across as a surface and not as a grille. Photo-etch really is cut through, so a genuine shadow and depth appear beneath it. On the engine deck, which is always visible from above on a model, that difference reads immediately.
It is usually enough to sand the original plastic grille down flat so that the photo-etch sits on a level surface. If you want to carry the effect further, mill an opening under the grille and back it from behind with a blackened surface - a view into empty space does more than any wash. It is bonded with super glue in drops around the edge, so that the glue does not get into the openings of the mesh. It pays to paint by spraying from a greater distance with thinner paint, or the openings will clog up.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and the model of the vehicle are not included in the package.
