A resin detail set from Metallic Details in 1:48 scale. It replaces the ejection seats in the cockpits of the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird strategic reconnaissance aircraft. On a model in 1:48 scale the seat is the dominant feature of the interior - with the canopy open it is the first thing the eye falls on. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory to a kit, which has to be owned separately.
The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is a two-seat strategic reconnaissance aircraft from the 1960s, built largely from titanium alloys because of the temperatures the airframe is exposed to during long flights at high supersonic speed and great altitude. The crew consists of a pilot and a reconnaissance systems operator, who sit in tandem one behind the other. Given the altitudes at which it flew, the crew wore full-pressure suits, and that fed through into the layout of the cockpits and the seats as well - the harnesses, connectors and runs of lines are markedly richer on this type than on an ordinary fighter.
First wash the castings in warm water with detergent to remove the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutter and level the lower surface with abrasive paper, so that the seat sits straight in the cockpit and at the right height. Sand wet and protect your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting. The seat is usually sprayed in a dark base shade, the padding is picked out in a different shade and the harnesses are added by hand; a final dark wash and fine drybrushing on the edges pull the structure out. Finish the seat and fit it only once the fuselage is closed, so that it is not damaged during handling.
This is a detail accessory, not a stand-alone model. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
