A wheel is made up of two materials with an entirely different character: the rubber tire is dark and matte, while the rim is painted in the shade of the airframe. Running the boundary round by hand with a brush almost never comes out concentric, and an irregular transition shows on a model more than many other things. A circular mask solves exactly this — it covers the rim, the tire is sprayed separately and the boundary stays accurate all the way round.

Tips for masking the wheels and the glazing

• Spike the wheel on a toothpick, so that you can turn it and will not touch the fresh paint.
• Spray the lighter shade of the rim first and only then the dark tire, as a dark paint covers better.
• Seat the circular mask in the middle and check that it runs true by looking from above, not from the side.
• Mask the glazing last of all, so that dust from sanding does not get under the mask.
• Before taking the masks off, let the last coat dry thoroughly, as fresh paint comes away with the tape.
