A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the P-51B Mustang fighter in 1:48 scale. With New Ware the EXPERT designation is the widest grade of the line: where BASIC deals above all with the main glazing, EXPERT goes further and masks other parts of the airframe that would be hard to trim by hand. The manufacturer gives the exact list on the packaging. The masks are cut to the shape of the Tamiya 61042 kit.
The P-51 Mustang was an American single-engine fighter that in its B version changed fundamentally: the original engine was replaced by a license-built British Merlin with a two-stage supercharger, which gave the aircraft its performance at high altitude. That is what turned the Mustang into an escort fighter able to fly with the bomber formations deep over the continent and return. The B version still had a framed canopy; only the later versions were given a bubble canopy with a view to the rear.
The framed canopy of the B version has more narrow frames than the later bubble type, and it is narrow frames that are hardest to trim by hand. A pre-cut mask gives a result here that a knife can hardly achieve. A wider grade typically also masks areas that need a sharp color transition or the covering of a round shape, for example the wheels. The procedure is always the same: set the mask with tweezers, press it down all the way round, spray thin coats straight from above and lift it off shortly after it has dried. It is a pity to throw the rest of the cut sheet away: the disks, strips and offcuts will serve when masking other models.
The package contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
