Stone modeled by the wind looks different than rock broken up by frost. It has no sharp edges and no regular crevices; it is rounded, smoothed and full of shallow hollows that grains of sand ground out in a sandstorm. It is precisely such a surface that this casting mold has. It is advised for desert landscapes, sea shores and beaches, that is where the shape of stone is decided by air and water rather than by the pressure of mountains.
For a continuous rock formation the pouring is repeated and the castings are composed side by side. So that the result does not look like wallpaper, it pays off to turn every second piece upside down, to set the neighbors against each other irregularly and to fill the joints between them with thin plaster, which only has to be rubbed into the texture with a finger. The difference between a finished face and a row of identical stones can be told at first glance.
A desert scene has the further advantage of making do with a minimum of vegetation. All the work shifts onto the stone and its color, so castings from one mold make up the skeleton of a whole diorama. Anyone building a coast will appreciate that the smooth areas take a gloss finish well, imitating wet stone in the surf zone.
