1:48 Me 163B Komet, stencils for the cockpit frames of the German rocket fighter.
Responsibility details are not available.
A canopy frame mask for the German Me 163B Komet rocket fighter in 1:48 scale. The cockpit on this machine is small, but it has a fair number of frames and in that scale they are strips a millimeter wide. Covering widths like that by hand tends to be a test of patience.
The Komet is a tailless aircraft powered by a rocket engine running on a two-component propellant. It took off from a jettisonable dolly, landed on an extending skid and climbed at a rate the Allied bomber formations had no answer to. It paid for that with only a few minutes of powered flight, after which it came back as a glider, and with exceptionally dangerous operation. The armament consisted of a pair of cannons in the wing root and the pilot had only a few seconds to score a hit, because he closed on the target with an enormous difference in speed. It entered combat only at the end of the war and its results fell short of expectations.
Small frames show through unless a base is laid under the paint, so apply the cockpit shade to them first and the exterior camouflage only after that. Spray square to the surface and at lower pressure, so that the paint does not creep under the edge. Finish the cockpit before you fit the canopy; you will not reach into such a cramped space later. The tailless shape also tempts one to set the model on a stand in a flying attitude, where the cockpit is right at eye level.
