A mask for spraying the early angular camouflage of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 E from the period 1939 to 1940. Scale 1:48, cut to the parts of the Airfix kit; it applies to the E-1, E-3, E-7 and the tropical modification.
Responsibility details are not available.
At the start of the war German fighters carried a very dark finish: the two greens on the upper surfaces reached deep down the sides of the fuselage and the light undersurface color took up only a narrow strip. That is how the machines looked over Poland and in the following months of calm on the western front. Only the experience of the fighting over the Channel showed that a dark aircraft is clearly visible from above at altitude and prompted a gradual lightening. A model in the early finish therefore looks markedly different from the same type a year later.
The difference from the later patterns lies not only in a different run of the edges but above all in the high-set dividing line between the upper and the lower color. It is precisely that which is hardest to do evenly freehand on both sides of the fuselage, and precisely that which pre-cut film solves.
It pays to proceed from the lightest shade to the darkest and not to hurry between coats. Once the mask is off, check the edge against the light; if paint has run somewhere, it can be put right with a fine brush before you start on the varnish and the decals. The set holds masking material exclusively, and you obtain the kit and the paints separately. The shapes are cut to one single particular Airfix kit in this scale.
Part of the early appearance is also a detail builders often pass over: in the first months of the war the national insignia had different proportions from later and the light field on them was narrower. The masking set does not deal with that part, but it is useful to bear it in mind when choosing decals, so that the machine looks of one piece.
