A masking set from the Dead Design brand in 1:48 scale for the Messerschmitt Bf-109E-4. It is neither a kit nor a part of a model but pre-cut masks, which bound an area while spraying with an accuracy that hand-cut tape achieves only with difficulty. For the same type the Dead Design range also has a version for masking from outside and inside and a separate set of national insignia; this item is the basic version.
The Bf-109E is the version of the Messerschmitt fighter with the Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine and angular cockpit glazing divided into flat panes. It is precisely that division that makes masking a fairly laborious operation on this type - there are many frames and they are narrow, so a mistake shows on them at once.
A pre-cut mask is only as accurate as the surface beneath it. Before you stick the mask on, go over the area with a soft cloth and degrease it - a fingerprint on the glazing or on the finish is a thin greasy layer on which the mask will not seat over its whole area and the paint will creep underneath by capillary action. Nor should you ever sand the glazing matte where the mask is to hold. Lay the mask with dry hands and in one go; relaying it weakens the adhesive and the second time it holds considerably worse.
The set holds masks only. The model and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
