About product

Bf-109G-6/AS cockpit 1:48 — a 3D printed interior from Eduard

The cockpit is the most looked-at place on a fighter model. Through a canopy slid back you can see the seat, the side walls and the instrument panel, and it is right there that the difference between plastic out of a mold and 3D printing shows most. This set deals with the cockpit area of the Messerschmitt Bf-109G-6/AS version in 1:48 scale and is made of resin by 3D printing, which manages thin sections and small controls better than a conventional mold.

The set is not a kit

It is an add-on. The basis of the build remains a plastic Bf-109G model, into which the resin assembly is fitted in place of the original interior.

The real subject

On the late Gustavs the AS suffix stands for the DB 605AS engine with a larger supercharger taken over from the bomber power unit. The aim was to give the fighter back its performance at high altitude, where until then the American escorts had the better of the Bf 109. The larger supercharger called for a reshaped, smoother engine cowling, by which the version can be told at first glance. Machines with this engine flew mainly with the Defense of the Reich units in the last phase of the war.

Building and painting tips

Try the interior dry first; on cockpits the fuselage walls often need thinning so that the halves will close without being forced. Wash the resin, cut it off the support structure and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue. Lay the cockpit green on with an airbrush in two shades and leave the deeper places darker. An oil wash and light drybrushing will bring the detail out, and the control levers are best painted with a fine brush right at the end. Fit the glazing only once the interior is finished, ideally with canopy glue.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the late versions of the Bf 109 in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who want to build with the canopy slid back
  • more experienced modelers with resin behind them
  • contest builds where the interior is judged

An add-on for a plastic kit. Which particular model it fits is not stated here.

FAQ

The DB 605AS engine with a larger supercharger, which gave the fighter back its performance at high altitude. The version can be told by the reshaped, smoother engine cowling.

Yes. The set deals only with the cockpit area; the aircraft itself you build from an ordinary Bf 109 kit in 1:48 scale.

With cockpit sets it is usual to thin the fuselage walls or rework the mating surfaces. Always try it dry first and take the material off a little at a time.

Spray the base with an airbrush, leave the deeper places darker, then add an oil wash and light drybrushing. Touch in the small controls with a fine brush at the end.
