About product

The Eduard 1:48 Mi-4 TFace masking set

A set of self-adhesive masks for the glazing of the Mil Mi-4 helicopter in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor a set of parts but an accessory to a finished model: the masks hold on the clear parts instead of laboriously cut tape and make it possible to spray the cockpit framing with a sharp edge. The manufacturer is the Czech company Eduard from Obrnice near Most.

What the designation TFace means

TFace means that the sheet contains masks for both sides of the glazing. You can therefore spray the framing from the outside in the shade of the airframe and from the inside in the interior color, which on a helicopter with a glazed nose and large windows is visible at first glance. The basic variant of the same set without the TFace suffix masks only the outer side. If you are building a model with the doors open or with a well worked out interior, choose the double-sided version.

The real subject

The Mil Mi-4 is a Soviet multi-purpose helicopter with a piston radial engine in the nose, a four-blade main rotor and a cargo compartment with clamshell doors at the rear. It served in transport, liaison and military roles and in the countries of the Eastern Bloc it stayed in service for decades. It is precisely the broken-up pilot's cockpit with a great many small windows that makes masking the most tedious part of the whole build.

How to use the masks

First degrease the clear part and do not touch it with your fingers. Lift the individual masks off the sheet with pointed tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay them in place and press them down with a cotton bud so that the edge seats everywhere. Spray several really thin coats; a heavy coat of paint likes to seep under the edge. The order is simple: first the interior shade, then the base and finally the top coat. Remove the masks soon after the paint is dry to the touch, running the tip of a scalpel along the framing rather than across it.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who build the Mi-4 in 1:48 scale and want sharp framing without cutting tape by hand
  • builders with an open cockpit or cargo compartment, where the inner side of the glazing is visible
  • anyone who cannot keep a straight line on broken-up glazing
  • modelers who want to shorten the most tiresome stage of a build to a few minutes

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

TFace contains masks for both sides of the glazing, so you spray the framing from the outside as well as from the inside. The basic variant masks only the outer side.

It is not. It is an accessory, a sheet of self-adhesive masks for painting the glazing. You have to obtain your own Mi-4 model in 1:48 scale.

Count on a single use. After spraying and removal the adhesive loses its grip and the edge of a mask will no longer seat as precisely.

Remove them soon after the paint is dry to the touch, not after several days. It helps to lift a corner with the tip of a scalpel and pull the mask off at an angle along the framing.
