The reconnaissance conversion of the well-known Soviet fighter received several distinct changes compared with the ordinary versions. A pylon for a large sensor pod with cameras or electronic equipment was added under the fuselage, the fuselage spine was widened because of the greater volume of fuel, and elongated containers appeared at the wingtips. The machine thus gained the range and the equipment that made it a platform able to bring back photographs from deep inside the enemy's territory, at a speed and an altitude where it had a decent hope of getting through against the defenses of the day.
The coloring of the pilot's space on this family of aircraft is not uniform. According to the production batch and later repairs the panels appear in both a gray and a green version, and the difference is pronounced enough for anyone to notice it on a finished model. This set covers the gray variant; the same manufacturer offers its counterpart with green panels separately. The choice should be based on the particular aircraft whose coloring you are building.
The relief-printed color layer is transferred onto the parts of the kit like a decal, but it carries a depth of its own, so the dials, the switches and the raised frames look like real equipment rather than a picture. Printed resin parts belong to the sheet as well. It is a good idea to paint the base in a neutral shade first and let it dry thoroughly; a damp layer under a decal is the commonest cause of wrinkling. Softeners are not used with this print, as they would attack the resin layer. The set reckons with a kit from the Eduard brand.
