1:48 MiG-31BM w/Kh-47M2 Expert kabuki masks — a New Ware masking set

A set of pre-cut self-adhesive templates of kabuki paper in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor decals, but an accessory with which you spray the glazing frames and other sharply bounded areas on a finished model. The designation in the name refers to the upgraded version of the two-seat interceptor equipped with a large external guided missile; the Expert line is the richer option of the set from this manufacturer.

Removing the mask — the step where mistakes happen most often

A mask does its job only at the moment you take it off. Leave the paper on the model until the last coat of clear has hardened properly, which with synthetic paints tends to be markedly longer than merely dry to the touch. Raise the edge with the tip of a scalpel or a needle and pull the paper off slowly, at an angle along the surface, not straight upwards. A perpendicular pull is exactly what takes fresh clear coat off along with the frame. When the coat of paint is thicker, run a sharp scalpel round the edge of the mask and cut the line first, so that the finish does not peel away in one piece. Any adhesive residue comes off with a cotton swab moistened in alcohol, and never with an aggressive thinner, which would leave the glazing matte.

How to use the set

• Wash and degrease the glazing beforehand, otherwise the mask will not hold all the way round.
• Take the parts out of the sheet with tweezers and press the edge down with a blunt point once stuck on.
• Spray in thin coats, as a thick coat creates a step at the edge.
• Leave the mask on the model during weathering and the final clear coating as well.
• Remove it at the very end, slowly and at an angle, cutting round the edge if need be.

For builders of large modern aircraft in 1:48 scale, where the glazed area is extensive and every inaccuracy in a frame shows. The set is cut for a particular kit, so check its compatibility in advance.
