This set from the Czech manufacturer Plus Model contains a resin replica of the Soviet R-60 air-to-air missile together with a single launch rail in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of an aircraft; it is an accessory of armament thanks to which a model of a fighter will look ready for a combat flight.
The R-60, AA-8 Aphid in the NATO reporting system, was in its day among the smallest and lightest air-to-air guided missiles in the world. The compact missile with infrared homing was intended for a turning air fight at close range, and thanks to its low weight it could be carried by a wide range of machines, from the MiG-21 and MiG-23 through the MiG-29 to the Su-17 fighter-bombers and the Su-25 ground-attack aircraft. On the aircraft they hung on characteristic launch rails, and a single rail for one missile was the most common arrangement.
Wash the small resin castings free of the mold release agent and cut the casting blocks off carefully, as the fine control surfaces of the R-60 are fragile. Join the parts with cyanoacrylate glue and paint the replica according to period photographs; the light body of the missile contrasts nicely with the darker rail. A wash in the parting lines will give a small part surprising depth.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
