A masking set in 1:48 scale intended for spraying the Japanese national insignia onto a model of the Mitsubishi A6M2a/b fighter. It is not a kit or decals but an accessory: you stick the precisely cut self-adhesive masks onto the model, spray the marking in paint and take the mask off. The result is markings that are part of the finish, so no carrier film appears on the surface and the risk of silvering or lifted edges falls away. This version is meant for markings with a white outline, that is with a surround around the red disc, which is laid on as a separate coat.
The Mitsubishi A6M Reisen was a carrier-based fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy and one of the most widespread Japanese aircraft of its day. The A6M2 version belongs to the early series with a radial engine and great range; the designations A6M2a and A6M2b are commonly used for two early production forms, which differ in, among other things, the treatment of the wingtips. The form of the national insignia changed on these machines during their service - a white surround around the red disc appeared especially on aircraft with a darker camouflage finish, where red alone would have been lost against the surface.
Stick the masks on only onto a perfectly cured, smooth and degreased finish, otherwise the edges will not take hold and the paint will run underneath. It pays to lay a thin coat of white or a light base under the hinomaru - red is semi-transparent and over dark camouflage it will otherwise darken. Spray several very thin coats at right angles to the mask, not at an angle across the edge. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, while the finish is not yet fully hard; the edge then does not tear away. Wipe off any adhesive residue with a damp cloth without solvent. At the end we recommend going over the whole model with a matte or semi-gloss clear coat, which evens out the sheen of the marking and of the surrounding area.
The package holds only the masking set. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it.
