About product

Eduard 1:48 - cannon barrels and cowl guns for the Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero

A set of 3D printed parts from Eduard for a model of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M3 carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. It contains armament parts: the barrels of the wing cannon and the guns mounted ahead of the cockpit above the engine. It is not an aircraft model but a set of replacement parts for a plastic kit you already have.

What the set is for

Barrels and gun muzzles belong to the parts where injection-molded plastic runs into its limits: a thin tube with an open muzzle cannot be made in a mold, so the plastic part tends to be solid and too thick. A printed replacement can hold a thin wall and the right ratio of length to diameter, which shows on a finished model at once. The set also suits modelers who do not want to drill out a plastic barrel with a micro drill.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A6M3 carried a pair of 20 mm cannon in the wing and a pair of synchronized 7.7 mm machine guns above the engine, firing through the propeller disc. It is exactly this combination of light machine guns and wing cannon that is characteristic of the type and shows well on a model from the front.

How the set differs from the other Eduard ranges

A Zoom set is a smaller, pre-painted selection from the full photo-etched set; the full photo-etched set is more extensive; masks are self-adhesive templates for the glazing and the wheels; bundled sets bring several sets together in one package; decal sets contain markings only. This item is a set of printed parts focused on the armament, not a photo-etched or a decal set.

Usage tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry. Separate the thin barrels from the support structure in several shallow cuts with a sharp scalpel rather than by twisting, as they are fragile. They are bonded with super glue metered out with a pin. Fit the barrels only once the painting and the varnish are finished, so that they do not get in the way during masking. Bring the muzzles out with a dark shade or a pigment; a dark graphite cast gives a better metal look than bright silver.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the A6M3 model in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers for whom solid plastic barrels without an open muzzle are not enough
  • Anyone wanting armament detail with no drilling and no rework

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The exact number of parts does not follow from the name of the item. By the name these are the barrels of the wing cannon and the guns ahead of the cockpit; check the particular contents in the manufacturer's data sheet.

Best of all at the very end, after painting, decals and varnish. Thin parts would get in the way during masking and handling and would break off easily.

Super glue metered out with a pin. Cement for plastic will not join printed parts.
