1:48 Mitsubishi J2M3/M5/M6 Raiden landing gear bay masks from Dead Design. They cover the open bays so that the top coat cannot get into them while the lower surfaces are sprayed.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of die-cut masks from Dead Design for a model of the Japanese Mitsubishi J2M Raiden interceptor in 1:48 scale. These are not canopy masks and not decals; they cover the inside of the landing gear bays for as long as the airframe is being sprayed.
The bay is painted before the airframe and usually has a different shade from the lower surfaces. As soon as the top color comes along, an open opening draws it inside and the carefully sprayed interior is covered over. Cotton wool or crumpled paper will plug the opening, but they hold unreliably and leave a smeared transition at the edges. A mask cut to the outline of the bay lies flush with the surface and gives a clean, crisp edge.
The proven procedure is simple: first the primer and the interior shade of the bay, after drying fit the mask and press it into the corners with a toothpick or a stick, and only then spray the lower surfaces. The mask is taken off only once the paint has dried completely, with tweezers and at an angle to the side; pulling it straight up is more likely to tear the edge of the finish. Before you lay the mask on, check that the area around it is degreased and free of dust.
The J2M Raiden was a single-engine fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy designed as an interceptor with heavy armament and fast climb, not as an agile dogfighter. The designations J2M3, J2M5 and J2M6 belong to its later production versions.
