A photo-etched set of seat belts in 1:48 scale for the early version of the P-51B and P-51C fighter, from the Czech maker Eduard. It is not a kit but a targeted accessory for one detail that is visible at first glance in an open cockpit. The STEEL designation in the name refers to the steel version of the belts. Metal can be bent into a natural shape and holds the sag, which molded plastic relief cannot do.
The North American P-51B and P-51C were the first Mustangs with the British Merlin engine built under license. It was this change that turned an originally average machine into an escort fighter with the range to reach Germany. The two versions differed only in the factory where they were built. Their identifying feature is the raised rear fuselage spine behind the cockpit, the razorback form, and a framed canopy, replaced on some machines by the bulged Malcolm hood.
Separate the belts with a sharp knife on a cutting surface and draw them over a rounded tool so that they take on a natural curve. One belt thrown over the edge of the seat reads more convincingly than two laid out straight. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer. Finish the seat and the cockpit before you place the belts, otherwise they will be bent out of shape during further handling.
