An accessory set of photo-etched metal parts for the model of the German Panther medium tank in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the tank but an aftermarket accessory for one particular Tamiya kit. It concentrates on the additional armor plates, that is, the thin sheets fastened to the vehicle outside the main armor. Metal is the ideal material for them: the real plates were thinner than a tenth of a millimeter in 1:48 scale, whereas a plastic part has to be many times thicker because of the technology, and seen from the side it gives that away at once.
The Panther was a German medium tank of the Second World War with a long-barreled 75 mm gun and with sharply sloped frontal armor, which markedly raised its resistance at a given thickness of plate. It was produced in several main production versions, which differed in the turret, the vision ports, the exhausts and details of the hull. On German vehicles the additional plates were used mainly as protection for the sides and the running gear against the rounds of antitank rifles and against shaped-charge ammunition, whose effect was dispersed before it ever reached the armor proper.
Straight plates need a straight joint: try the hangers and the brackets dry first and only then glue, or you will set the whole side of the vehicle askew. Run the bends on a straight edge, not between your fingers. A rewarding and very realistic effect arises when you leave some of the plates slightly bent or one of them missing altogether - in the field damaged plates were common, and a model comes alive by it at once. Degrease the metal with spirit before painting and spray a primer. Unify the transitions between the plates and the hull with dust pigment, so that the photo-etch does not look like a foreign part stuck on.
This is an accessory set, not a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
