This accessory is not a model of machinery but a piece of equipment for a scene. The subject is an ordinary plastic barrel with a volume of 120 liters, that is a container of the kind found by workshops, in yards, in depots and on farms. In 1:48 scale it is a small object that represents nothing on its own, but the moment you stand it beside a figure or a vehicle it gives a diorama a legible sense of scale and a lived-in look.
The barrel suits civilian as well as military scenes from the postwar era to the present day, because plastic containers of this type are still in use. It proves itself by a repair workshop, by a field kitchen, on an airfield area and in the corner of a factory yard. Apply the base shade with an airbrush or a brush; acrylic paints are amply enough. Character comes only with the weathering, that is a dark wash in the recesses and around the top rim, fine streaks from spilled liquid and a dust pigment at ground level. Glue the barrel to the base with cyanoacrylate glue; with a part this small a single drop is enough.
