Three pieces in the package make practical sense: vacuum-formed parts are trimmed with a scalpel and the first attempt may not come off, so you have a spare.

The real subject

The Polikarpov I-16 is a Soviet single-engine low-wing fighter of the 1930s with a short fuselage, a radial engine and retractable landing gear. It was built in a whole range of single-seat production batches that differ, among other things, in the layout of the cockpit area. That is exactly why a replacement clear part is rewarding on this type - it lets you match the shape of the canopy to the particular version you are building.

How vacuum-formed parts are worked

• First try the trimming procedure on one piece, and only then go to the part you will use.
• Mark the outline with a fine marker, go over it with a sharp scalpel in repeated light passes and snap the part out at the end.
• Level the edges with fine abrasive paper on a flat support; keep checking the fit, as material removed cannot be put back.
• Polish out any scratches on the clear surface with a fine sanding sponge and polishing paste, or seal them by dipping in clear varnish.
• Glue with clear PVA cement, not with solvent-based plastic cement - that would fog the film.
• Mask the frames and spray in thin coats; the interior color first, and only then the external shade.
